A detailed and scholarly work, considered an important book by Gutzke. Includes a chapter on the Coffey still.
WESTCOTT'S PRICE GUIDE TO ADVERTISING WATER JUGS & ASSOCIATED COLLECTABLES. Volume Two. Denliquin, NSW, Australia: Westcott Publications, 1999. 176pp. Numerous illustrations mainly colour, of water jugs, decanters, ash trays, figurines and trays. Mostly water jugs and virtually all relate to whisky. Valuations are given in A$, £ and US$. Although a price guide there is a fair amount of information on both the potteries and the distilleries.
WATER OF LIFE. A History of Wine-Distilling and Spirits from 500BC to AD2000. Totnes, Devon: Prospect Books, 2007. 300pp. B/w illus (12). A history of distilling in the Middle East and Europe from the earliest experiments by the Pythagorean alchemists of Ptolemaic Egypt to the commercial production of spirits in the British Isles. There are twelve chapters divided into three sections. The first is ‘The Ancient and Early Medieval World’; ‘The Eastern Mediterranean Region’; ‘The Later Middle Ages’; ‘Western Europe’; ‘From Early Modern Times to AD2000: The British Isles’. While treating extensively of the mystical, cultist and religious origins of distilling, as well as its links to early science, Ms Wilson looks closely at all forms of distilling in the British Isles. This includes the manufacture of spirituous liquors such as whisky, gin, and others. Plus the central part played in country house domestic life by cordial waters and other distillations manufactured with great skill by generations of housewives as home medicine and perfumery. BUY WD
ARDBEG. The Jewel of Islay. Glasgow: Angels' Share, 2001. vi + 42pp. Well illus in col and b/w. Good history of the distillery. Includes tasting notes of current malts. Plus the text about the distillery from the 1887 edition of The Whisky Distilleries of the United Kingdom by Alfred Barnard.
SCOTCH. Its History and Romance. Newton Abbot: David & Charles, 1973 184pp + 8pp b/w plates. B/w illus + map. Although details of the manufacture of whisky are included, the book concentrates more on the myths, legends and stories of the spirit. Good book, considered essential for every whisky lover's library

THE CLASSIC WHISKY HANDBOOK. An Essential Companion to the World's Finest Whiskies. London: Lorenz Books [Anness Publishing], 1998 ed. 64pp. Many illus mainly col. The publishers blurb on the dust wrapper states, "The definitive whisky companion - history, distillation, the brands and how to serve them." All in 64 pages, with 3 or more illustrations to a page, probably an exaggeration. Nicely done, and attractive to look at.
