Covers all types of memorabilia including bottles, labels, beer ma= ts, pumps and posters. Good book, but because of the wide ranging items dealt with it cannot do them justice. Contents are as new, but there are minor faults to covers and dust jackets. Book No.609. £12.50

Edwards, G. &a= mp; S. THE DICTIONARY OF DRINK. A Guide to Every Type of Beverage. Stroud: Sutton Publishing, new edition, 2007. 1456pp. 9¼x6 First published in 1989 as The Language of Drink, this book has been reprinted quite a few times, but has been unavailable for some years. It is an indispensable reference book that should be on all book shelves. An A = 211; Z guide to every type of beverage, alcoholic and non alcoholic. Well over 40,000 entries including 4,000 cocktails with recipes, 1,000 on tea and coffee, and of course thousands on beers, wines, spirits and associated topics. Paperback. VG+. Kallen<= span style=3D'font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial'>, S.A. THE COMPLETE IDIOT'S GUIDE TO BEER. New York, USA: Alpha Books, 1999 rep. xxil +362pp. 9x7&frac1= 4; B/w illus. Not sure how the publisher's managed this politically incorrect ti= tle in American, but pleased they did. Not that it is a particularly good title. Book is much better than the title suggests. It contains a vast amount of information and topics covered include, the brewing process, beer and foo= d, and starting you own commercial brewery. American bias, but deals with the rest of the world as well. Lists the top 50 beers in = the worlds, one of my favourites is in 21st position, Old Perculier. The top beer is Delirium Tremens, a stro= ng, sweet delicious lager from G= hent, Belgium= . That is the author's description, I have never hear= d of it let alone tasted it. VG+. Book No.851. £8.00

Dagenham: Barrel to Bottle Press, 2007. (ii) + 8pp + (ii). 8¼x5¾ Copy of an 8 page leaflet originally printed in 1852/= 3 by Bradbury & Evans, Whitefriars, London. The letter is followed by 5 pages of testimonials by doctors and surgeons= on the purity and health benefits of Allsopp's A= les. Text of the original was very clear apart from 10 lines on the last page. These lines can be read with difficulty, but to avoid any problems the te= xt is reproduced on the adjacent page. Music & Pr= ose. THE TALE OF ALE: The Story of the Englishman and his Beer. An audiocassette from Free Reed Records, 1993. A collection of the songs and stories of The Englishman – and woman! – = and their beer. They range from the 15th to the early 20th century, although = most are pre 1800. The readings are by Joby Blanshard, Michael Smee= , and William Rushton. Music contributions are by P= eter Bellamy, Robin Dransfield, John Foreman, Vic Gammon, Pam Gilder, Roy Harris, Eddie Upton, Peter Wood, Oriana, The Pump and Pluck Band, and Musica Inebriata. The track listing is very confusing; I h= aven't been able to figure it out. Even the details supplied with the cassette contradict themselves. Details from other sources also differ. I have put together a listing that I think is as right as it will ever be. Click here to vie= w it. This collection was originally released in 1973 as a double album, and was digitally re-mastered and reissued as a CD and cassette. The cassette runs for 98 minutes, whilst the CD [currently unavailable] only runs for 78 minutes. CAMRA said of this collection - the long-standing liaison between folk music and real ale is at last given fo= rmal recognition – it's excellent. New. Book No.667. &po= und;7.00

An extremely detailed book on the subject dealing with old and modern brews. Covers some foreign beers, and has an appendix of herbs use= d in brewing, a glossary, bibliography and much more. A personal selection of beers, from be= st bitters to barley wines, Belgian brews to golden ales, browns and milds to porter and stout. Includes a directory of = beer styles outlines the different types and tastes to expect, plus comprehens= ive information on 300 beers, their brewery details, country of origin, and tasting notes. Unique indexes for charting which beers you have tasted, together with tasting note boxes for creating your own personal records. Personally I would like to try many more than 300 before I go. HEAVENLY BEER.= A Taster's Guide to Monastery Tradition Ales and Lagers. London: Carroll & Brown, 2002 1st= ed. 128pp. 8x8 Profusely illustrated in colour. Guide to beers with a religio= us connection. Mainly European, but also some from No= rth America. Nicely done and a good idea, but I found the connec= tion rather slight in some cases. For example Brakspear is included because the founding family are descendants of Nicholas Breakspear who was the only Englishman to be a Pope= . As Pope he had the symbol of a bee in his mitre and the bee symbol is incorporated in the breweries trade mark. Nicholas became Pope Adrian IV = in 1154, the brewery was founded some 625 years later m= aking any connection extremely tentative. VG+ in dw. Book No.356. £12.00

The materials used, the brewing processes, the romance of beer, changing face of British brewing, and British brewers today are the topics covered. Plus beers to try (cask & bottled), places to visit and book= s to read. Author is a Master Brewer and worked for Bass for 30 years. Card covers. VG+. Book No.553. £5.99 BUY from Pickabook for £4.01

Rock, H. PUB BEER MUGS AND GLASSES. Princes Risbo= rough: Shire Publications, 2006. 56 pp. 8¼x5¾ With 117 col & 15 b/w illus. Pub mugs form an interesting aspect of Britain<= /st1:place>'s social history. They were not just drinking vessels, but also measures, a= nd as such the subject of much regulation, because drinkers wanted to be sur= e of receiving what they had paid for. Approx 800pp. 9x6 A comprehensive bibliography on brewing and beer. Part I covers Latin brewi= ng literature, part II German brewing literature and part III the brewing literature from the rest of the world including England, Russia, Italy and most of the rest of Europe. Some 3000 items are described. Bound in green cloth with gilt titles on a black background. VG+. Book No.338. £62.50

Skilnik= , B. BEER AND FOOD: An American History. Oxf= ord, Mississippi: Je= fferson Press, November 2006. 280pp. 9x6 The timeless combination of America's favourite frothy beverage, with its solid gastronomic counterparts, is th= e focus of this culinary chronicle, American brewing expert, Bob Skilnik's sixth book. Documenting the parallel development of the brewing industry = with that of American cookery, this exhaustive history traces ale's influence = on recipes in America's early history, the introduction of lager beer in the 19th century, the use of malt extract during Prohibition, and the recent advent of craft beer. The 101 beer-related recipes encourage chefs to experience the bliss of wild salmon grilled on cedar planks or brownies washed down with a creamy stout. Waldo, M. BEER AND GOOD FOOD. Brighten Your Menus with Beer and Ale. London: Arco Publictions, 1959 1st ed thus. 264pp. 8x5¼ S= mall b/w illus to text. Introduction by C.L. Shaw, Secretary of The Brewer's Society [well in 1959 he was]. Deals with cooki= ng with beer, drinking beer with food, unusual recipes and party ideas, and beer drinks. Some odd drinks in this section, including Dog's Nose. A mixture = of gin and beer, sound's revolting. VG in dw. Book No. 739. £10.00

Whitbread.

A BOOK ABOUT B= EER. London: Whitbread, 1955. 24pp. 7x4¾ Although not mentioned in the booklet = the very good colour illustrations (example shown) are by Eric Fraser and were also used to illustrate Whitbread's 1954 calendar. The booklet covers all aspects of the beer making process, from the growing of the barley and ho= ps to the serving in the pub. Includes a short illustrated section on cooper= age. One of the best examples of brewery ephemera that I've seen for a long ti= me. Some very minor chipping to the card covers otherwise VG+. Book No.269. £3.75

MAINLY ABOUT B= EER. Beer and Cider. East Ardsley, Wakefield: Educational Productions Ltd., 1969 1st ed. 48pp. 5¼x8 B/w illus. A small book, but lots of detail. Includes making of beer and cider, the pu= b, the landlord, the law, mixed drinks, and cooking with beer and cider, plus even more. One of the Know the Drink series, and although the publisher is given as Educational Productions, it is really a Whitbread book. Card cov= ers. VG. Book No.525. £2.50=

Wiley, H.W. BEVERAGES AND THEIR ADULTERATION: Origin, Composition, Manufacture, Fermented, Distilled, Alkaloidal and Fruit Juices. Whitefish, MT,= USA: K= essinger Publishing, 2006. xvi + 421pp. 9x6 B/w illus [= 42 (see note below)]. This is a reprint of a book published in 1919 by P. Blakiston's Son & Co. of Philadelphia. The book covers waters, mineral waters, soft drinks, fruit juices, coffee, tea, co= coa and chocolate, wine, beer, whisky, brandy, rum, gin, cordials and liqueur= s, alcoholic remedies and beverages containing cocaine. Content is quite detailed with many historical references and statistics, as well as techn= ical details of production and legal comment. Cider is included in the fruit juices section. Beer gets only 15 pages and the chapter includes Sake and= fermented beverages made from milk. Distilled beverages get about 120 pages with a = good section on whisky. The book is a Print on Demand publication and although= the text is clear, many of the illustrations are very poorly reproduced. Paperback. VG+. Book No. 760. £22.99 BUY from Pickabook for £18.13=

Young, J. (Edi= ted by K.W. Osborne). COMMEM= ORATIVE BEERS Including Special Issues by Brewers (and Private Persons) from the Start of Bottling Beer to the End of 1983. Countess Wear, Devon: Better Pubs Ltd., 1984. 40pp. 8¼x6 = B/w illustrations of labels. No doubt a comprehensive listing, but rather dif= ficult to read, illustrations and type are small. Layout would never win a design prize, but content of interest. Card covers. VG. Book No.701. £4.00
