Covers 110 towns and villages from Alvescot<= /span> to Wroxham. Particularly relevant with the ch= anges in brewing happening at Henley and Witney. Paperback. VG+. Book No.503. £12.50<= /o:p>

Brewers' Compa= ny. A SHORT HISTORY OF THE WORSHIPFUL COMPANY OF BREWERS. London: Brewers' Company, 1962. 10pp + 2pp b/w illus. 7¼x6 Given that their history goes back to about 1350 this is a very brief history of The Masters and Keepers or Wardens and Commonalty of the Mystery or Art of Brewers of the City of London [their full title]. Nicely printed and cloth bound with gi= lt decoration to the front cover. VG+. Book No.836. £7.50

= Cheltenham. WINTLE'S BREWE= RY LIMITED (in liquidation) to THE CHELTENHAM ORIGINAL BREWERY COMPANY LIMIT= ED. Conveyance and Assignment of freehold and leasehold properties situate in the Counties of Gloucester, Hereford, Monmouth and Brecon. Dated 7th May, 1937. 28pp. 15¾x10½= An original copy of a legal document made at the time giving details of signatories and witnesses of the agreement. Seven handwritten amendments added at later dates, the last being dated 25th February 1941. As well as= the legal niceties it lists four schedules, the second being of most interest= . It is a listing of 93 properties, mostly inns and hotels, but also an off licence or two, a parcel of land, Mitcheldean Brewery, and rather oddly Mitcheldean Town Hall. Detail varies, but a typical entry re= ads DRYBROOK. – NEW INN. ALL THAT messuage or Inn known as the New Inn situate at Drybrook in the County of Gloucest= er and all outbuildings and appurtenances thereunto belonging comprising in the = rear and at the side stone erection of coach house with tile roof stabling for three loft over closet public urinal stone erection of stabling and brick= pig cots and a small meadow and garden situate at the other side of the house= and other outbuildings and appurtenances thereunto belonging TOGETHER with the site thereof and the land occupied therewith which said premises are now = in the occupation of Walter Virgo as tenant. Capitals and punctuation {complete lack of) as per the original. The other schedules refer to shareholders, an off licence, a cellar and some land. Pages 24-28 are bla= nk. An interesting historical document that is in excellent condition with pa= per covers bound with thin cord. Scarce. Several copies available G to VG. Book No.764. Deuchars, S. PAINTINGS POLITICS & PORTER. Samuel Whitbread II (1764-1815) = and British Art. London: Whitbread &Co., 1984 1st ed. 112pp. 10¼x7¼ B/w illus. Catalogue of an exhibition held at the Mu= seum of London, 21st February to 29th April 1984. Features sculpture, painting= s, engravings, prints and maps. Detailed catalogue, which on the surface dos= not appear to have much to do with the firm and beer. However many of the exh= ibits are connected to the brewing firm. There are many portraits of family mem= bers and associates. For example there is a portrait by Gainsborough of Samuel Green the Elder who was the principal brewer at <= st1:address w:st=3D"on">Chiswell Street and worked at the brewery for at least 43 years. Ironically Samuel Green = the Younger was dismissed for neglect of duty. No doubt further reading would bring forth more anecdotal nuggets. Card covers. VG+. Book No.325. £6.00

Dutton's Blackburn Brewery. 150 YE= ARS OF THE HOUSE OF DUTTON. Blackburn: Du= tton's Blackburn Brewery Limited, July 1949. viii + 6= 8pp. 10x6¼ B/w plates, maps. Cartographic end papers printed blue and white. The history of the brewery and it's pub= s. Contains a listing of all pubs owned in 1949. Good illustrations mainly of pubs. Contents in very good condition, except that some idiot has drawn biro lines along side some paragraphs. Five pages affected. Covers and spine dulled, with some minor marks. Book No.610. £8= .00

Edwards, G. &a= mp; S. THE DICTIONARY OF DRINK. A Guide to Every Type of Beverage. Stroud: Sutton Publishing, new edition, 2007. 1456pp. 9¼x6 First published in 1989 as The Language of Drink, this book has been reprinted quite a few times, but has been unavailable for some years. It is an indispensable reference book that should be on all book shelves. An A = 211; Z guide to every type of beverage, alcoholic and non alcoholic. Well over 40,000 entries including 4,000 cocktails with recipes, 1,000 on tea and coffee, and of course thousands on beers, wines, spirits and associated topics. Paperback. VG+. Glover, B. LOYALTY PAYS. A History of the United Clubs Brewery. Stroud, Gloucestershire: Alan Sutton Publishing in Association with Crown Buckley, 1995 1st ed. 128pp. 9¼x6¾ B/w illus. The history of the Monmouthshire United Clubs Brewery (now the Crown Brewery) founded in 191= 9 to supply clubs with reliable beer at the right price. Official history published to celebrate its 75th anniversary. Paperback. VG+. Book No.357. £5.00

Gutzke<= span style=3D'font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial'>, D.W. PUBS AND PROGRESSIVES. Reinventing the Public House in England<= /st1:place>, 1896-1960. DeKalb, Illinois: North Illinois University Press, 2006 1st edition. xiii + 360= pp. 9¼x6¼ B/w illus, tables and charts. A well researched schol= arly book that is also of interest to the general reader. Extensive notes and bibliography are included. Although a book primarily about pubs, it should also prove of interest to brewery historians. Ironically the nearest Superpub to me [The Robin Hood] has recently been demolished to make way for a supermarket. VG+ in dw. Book No.523. £32.50

Lacon & Co. Ltd. BREWING IN EAST ANGLIA: Lacon's of Great Yarmouth. Reprint from The Brewer= s' Journal, February 1965. 8pp including paper covers. 8½x5½ B= /w illus, map. A short history of the firm, with photog= raphs of the brewing plant as it was in the 1960s. VG. Book No.406. £1.50

McKenna, J.

BLACK COUNTRY BREWERIES. Stroud: Tempus Publishing, 2005. 128pp. 9¼x6½ The Black Cou= ntry was the industrial heartland of England. It is known for its home-brew houses, and the characters associated with them. Featuring over= 100 b/w illustrations, it provides an insight into the history of brewing in = the region. Paperback. WARWICKSHIRE B= REWERIES. Stroud: Tempus Publishing,= 2006. 96pp. 9¼x6½ B/w illus. Provides an insight into the history= of brewing in Warwickshire. This book charts the history of the county's licensed trade from humble beginnings - from the creation of a Common Bre= wery at Coventry in 1801, to the establishment of major forces such as Flowers of Stratford during the 1830s to the prominence of micro-breweries in the 1980s. WHITBREAD'S BREWERIES. A Chronological Survey of the Evolution of One of the Oldest Groups of Breweries in Britain. Sheffield & London: Publishing & Literary Services and Whitbread & Co., 1984 1st ed. 56pp. 8¼x11¾ B/w map. As the title suggests a listing of breweries owned by Whitbread from 1742-1971. Short histories given for ma= in breweries. Produced when Whitbread were committed to making beer rather t= han just making money. Some very minor chipping to the card covers otherwise VG+. Book No.324. £5.00

Nicholson, P.<= /span> BREWER AT BAY. The Memoirs of Sir Paul Nicholson. Spennymoor, County Durham: The Memoir Club, 2003 1st ed. xiv + 242pp. 9½x6½ B/w illus. The Nichol= son family were involved in the Vaux Group's Sund= erland Brewery throughout the 162 years of its existence. The book includes a fu= ll account of the destruction of the breweries and has some pungent comments= on those responsible. There are detailed appendices concerning the closure of the breweries. Also includes details of the many varied facets of Nichols= on's life to date. VG+ in dw. Book No.452. £17.50<= /o:p>

Page, K= . THE STORY OF BIGGLESWADE BREWERY, 176= 4-1993. Biggleswade: The Author, 1993 1st ed thus. 95= pp. 8¾x6 Many b/w illus. Much expanded and revised edition of a booklet published in 1984. The author worked at the brewery for 49 years. Good bo= ok. Paperback. VG+. Book No.580. £3.50

Putman, R. BEERS AND BREWERIES OF BRITAIN. Princes Risborough: Shire Publications, 2004. 56pp. 8¼x5¾ Col, b/w illus. The materials used, the brewing processes, the romance of beer, changing face of British brewing, and British brewers today are the topic= s covered. Plus beers to try (cask & bottled), places to visit and books to read. Author is a Master Brewer and worked for Bass for 30 years. Card covers. VG+. Book No.553. £5.99 BUY from Pickabook for £4.01

Redman, N.B. LOUIS PASTEUR AND THE BREWING INDUSTRY. London: Whitbread, 1995. 12pp includi= ng covers. 11¼x8¼ B/w illus. Article that originally appeared = in The Brewer in September, 1995 and reprinted by Whitbread for an event held at Whitbread's Brewery on 28th September 1995, marking the 1000th anniversar= y of the death of Louis Pasteur. Short but detailed article, and includes deta= ils of Pasteur's visits to Whitbread's brewery. VG+. Book No.412. £1.50

Ricketts, B. GONE FOR A BURTON. Memoirs from a Great British Heritage. London: Pen Press Publishers, 2005. (= viii) + 239pp. 7¾x5 A look at the demise of B= ritish brewing through the eyes of a one time Managing Director of Bass Brewing. Covers many aspects of the trade, including, scientific aspects, health benefits, and the current downside, binge drinking. It also explores the business and political sides of the brewing industry. Interestingly also includes the procedures that have to be carried out if you find a dead cat floating in a vessel of fermenting beer. The text is interspersed with wh= at the author calls "Note to file" or what one would probably call= a bon mot or a pearl of wisdom. An example being "Bet your bottom doll= ar that something will always come along to ruin the best-laid plans of mice= and men". A book that is interestingly different. Paperback. VG+. Symonds= , R. A BREWING HERITAGE. The Story of Brewing in Reigate & Redhill. Horsham: The Author, 2001. 120pp. 11¾x8¼ B/w illus of pubs, adverts, breweries, beer labels. Details of the breweries, pubs and related matters. A well researched book that received a good review in the Brewery History Society's journal. Paperback. VG+. Book No.289. £14.75<= /o:p>

Whitbread.

THE STORY OF W= HITBREAD. 250 Years of Whitbread 1742-1992. London<= /st1:place>: Talisman Communications for Whitbread PLC, June 1992. 72pp including paper covers. 13x9½ Numerous excellent colour, b/w illus. Centre spread shows a full colour advert for London Stout. A large magazine style publication detail= ing the history of Whitbread from various beery angles. Includes much on adve= rts, and also transport, hops, pubs, bottled beers, and food. Much of the information comes from the now defunct Whitbread Archive and the then archivist Nick Redman helped with the preparation of this publication. Se= aled in original polythene mailing bag. Young, J. ACTING UP. My Life and Times. Weardale, Co. Durham: The Memoir Club, 2006 1st ed. x + 180pp. 9½x6¼ B/w illus. T= he autobiography of the chairman [from 1962 until 2006] of Young & Co's Brewery. There is a a lot about the brewery, but the book also covers other facets of his life, including his childhood sailing exploits on the Essex and Suffolk coast a= nd his career as a pilot in the Fleet Air Arm. In later years the book deals with his charity work and his love of acting. Sadly he died in September = 2006 only weeks after finishing this book, and at which time he was the oldest= and longest serving chairman of any brewery in Britain. VG+. Book No.800. £19.75<= /o:p>
