Strange pagination; 1-10, iii-xvi, 13-284. 8¾x5¾ Very important English work on brewing. The exact dat= e of publication is unknown, but is usually thought to be around 1830. The publisher of this reprint has put 1830 on the spine, Noling gives the date as c1840, and Schoellhorn list= s two editions, 1829 and 1834. The National Brewing Library, Oxford has one copy and gives the dat= e as 1829. Original editions are eagerly sought after by collectors, and this = is a very welcome reprint. With Numerous Illustrations. Oh= io, USA: Raudins Publish= ing, 2002 reprint (approx 500 copies) of 1852 1st edition published by H.C. Baird of Philadelphia. 199pp. 8¾x5½ B/w illus. An important early America work on the subject. Title is a good description of the contents. Also includes a chapter on t= he cultivation of hops. Welcome reprint, as originals are very scarce. Bound in brown bonded leather with gilt to front cover and spine. VG+. Book No.398. £21.50

Chapman, T. THE CYDER-MAKER'S INSTRUCTOR, Sweet-M= aker's Assistant, And Victualler's and Housekeeper's= DIRECTOR. IN THREE PARTS. PART I. Directs the grower to make his cyder in the manner foreign wines are made; to preserve its body and flavour; to lay on a colour, and to cure all its disorders, whether bad flavour'd, prick'd, oil= y, or ropy. PART II. Instructs the trader or housekeeper to make raisin-wines, = at a small Expence, little {if any thing} inferior= to foreign wines in strength or flavour; to cure their disorders; to lay on = them new bodies, colour, &c. PART III. Directs the brewer to fine his beer= and ale in a short time, and to cure them if prick'd or ropy. To which is added, A Me= thod to make yest to ferment beer, as well as common = yest, when that is not to be had. All actually dedu= ced from the AUTHOR'S experience. Dagenham: Barrel to Bottle Press, 2007 reprint. 17pp. 8¼x5¾ Not a facsimile, but not a reprint eit= her, a sort of hybrid based on the 1762 edition. Limited edition of 500 hand= numbered copies. vi + xii + 299pp. 9¾x7½ Digitally reset reprint of the rare 1762 1st edition published in London and printed by J. Haberkorn. Sold by R. and J= . Dondsley in Pall-Mall; T. Becket and P.A. de Hondt at Tully's Head in the Strand: and T. Longman in Pater-Noster Row. This is o= ne of the most important early brewing books and first editions are eagerly sou= ght by collectors. Well produced book, printed on 60lb natural offset paper a= nd bound in black bonded leather with gilt to spine and front cover. VG+. Book No.475. £37.50<= /o:p>

East Malling Research Association. MEMBERS DAY REPORT. H= OPS. July 1991. 10pp, 8¼x5¾ B/w illus. A small booklet covering matters= dealt with at a meeting held for members. Although quite short the booklet is detailed and of a technical nature. One topic dealt with was Hop Intent <= span class=3DSpellE>Viroid in UK Hops. Card covers. VG+. Book No.407/15. £1.50

Lacon & Co. Ltd. BREWING IN EAST ANGLIA: Lacon's of Great Yarmouth. Reprint from The Brewer= s' Journal, February 1965. 8pp including paper covers. 8½x5½ B= /w illus, map. A short history of the firm, with photog= raphs of the brewing plant as it was in the 1960s. Although almost 40 years old this small booklet is almost as new. Book No.406. £1.50

Liebig<= span style=3D'font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial'>, J. REMARKS UPON THE ALLEGED USE STRYCHNINE IN THE MANUFACTURE OF PALE ALE. (In a Letter to Henry Allsopp, Esq., Burton-on-Trent)= . Dagenham: Barrel to Bottle Press, 2007. (ii) + 8pp + (ii). 8¼x5¾ Copy= of an 8 page leaflet originally printed in 1852/3 by Bradbury & Evans, <= span class=3DSpellE>Whitefriars, London. The letter is follo= wed by 5 pages of testimonials by doctors and surgeons on the purity and health benefits of Allsopp's Ales. Text of the origi= nal was very clear apart from 10 lines on the last page. These lines can be r= ead with difficulty, but to avoid any problems the text is reproduced on the adjacent page. It is known for its home-brew houses, and the characters associated with them. Featuring over= 100 b/w illustrations, it provides an insight into the history of brewing in = the region. Paperback. This book charts the history of the county's licensed trade from humble beginnings - from the creation of a Common Brewery at Coventry in 1801, to the establishmen= t of major forces such as Flowers of Stratford during the 1830s to the promine= nce of micro-breweries in the 1980s. Patton, J. ADDITIVES, ADULTERANTS AND CONTAMINANTS IN BEER. Swimbridge, Barnstaple: Patton Publications, 1989 1st ed. xii + 275pp. Many good b/w illus from historical sources. An extremely detailed book on the subject dealing with old and modern brews. Covers some foreign beers, and has an appendix of h= erbs used in brewing, a glossary, bibliography and much more. Redman, N.B. LOUIS PASTEUR AND THE BREWING INDUSTRY. London: Whitbread, 1995. 12pp includi= ng covers. 11¼x8¼ B/w illus. Article that originally appeared = in The Brewer in September, 1995 and reprinted by Whitbread for an event hel= d at Whitbread's Brewery on 28th September 1995, marking the 1000th anniversar= y of the death of Louis Pasteur. Short but detailed article, and includes deta= ils of Pasteur's visits to Whitbread's brewery. VG+. Book No.412. £1.50

Schoellhorn, F. BIBLIOGRAPHIE DES BRAUWESENS= . Mansfield Center, CT: Martino Publishing, <= span class=3DSpellE>Nd (1999). Reprint of the 1928 (Berlin) edition. Approx 800pp. 9x6 A comprehensive bibliography on brewing and beer. Part I covers Latin brewi= ng literature, part II German brewing literature and part III the brewing literature from the rest of the world including England, Russia, Italy an= d most of the rest of Europe. Some 3000 items are described. Bound in green cloth with gilt titles on a black background. VG+. Book No.338. £62.50

Wiley, H.W. BEVERAGES AND THEIR ADULTERATION: Origin, Composition, Manufacture, Fermented, Distilled, Alkaloidal and Fruit Juices. Whitefish, MT,= USA: K= essinger Publishing, 2006. xvi + 421pp. 9x6 B/w illus [= 42 (see note below)]. This is a reprint of a book published in 1919 by P. Blakiston's Son & Co. of Philadelphia. The book covers waters, mineral waters, soft drinks, fruit juices, coffee, tea, co= coa and chocolate, wine, beer, whisky, brandy, rum, gin, cordials and liqueur= s, alcoholic remedies and beverages containing cocaine. Content is quite detailed with many historical references and statistics, as well as techn= ical details of production and legal comment. Cider is included in the fruit juices section. Beer gets only 15 pages and the chapter includes Sake and fermented beverages made from milk. Distilled beverages get about 120 pag= es with a good section on whisky. The book is a Print on Demand publication = and although the text is clear, many of the illustrations are very poorly reproduced. Paperback. VG+.
