Small informative booklet with a very good illustration of the inn sign used as a logo by the Inn Sign Society [the White Hart Inn, Scole, Norfolk]. The Brewers' Soci= ety also issued a booklet with the same title in the 1930s, but they are completely different. VG+. Book = No.608. £1.50

Although sometimes criticized beca= use the location of the signs is not always given, it is still essential for = the inn sign library. The author is an American of Irish descent who has had a pint in over 2,100 pubs Has a chapter = about pub sign painters of the 18th/19th centuries, and a bibliography. VG+ in slightly chipped dw. Lamb, C= . INN SIGNS. Princes Risborough: Sh= ire Publications, 1976 1st edition. Shire Album 12. 32pp. 8¼x6 B/w ill= us. Although a small book it contains quite a lot of information. The book is based on Discovering Inn Sings by Cadbury Lamb & Gordon Wright. Has been out of print for some years. F= irst editions are scarce. Paperback. VG-. Book No.860. £4.50

Shire 'Discovering' Series No.27. 64pp. 7x4½ Thirty-two of the pages of = the book are black and white illustrations of inn signs printed on glossy pap= er. The text is in themed sections such as, Animal Signs, Signs of Travel, Tr= ade Signs and Famous People. First editions are scarce. Paperback. The signs are arranged alphabetically and an entry usually include location, explanation of the name and in some cases a brief histo= rical note about the pub. Waters, C. A DICTIONARY OF PUB, INN & TAVERN SIGNS. Newbury: Country= side Books, 2005 160pp. 8¼x5¾ B/w illus. Described by the publis= her "A handy reference book detailing the history behind the names of ov= er 3,000 pub signs, together with pictures of some of the most striking signs hanging outside these hostelries today." Rather basic in places and = will not replace the Dunkling & Wright book as= the inn sign bible. However always useful to have an inn sign dictionary in print. Paperback. VG+.
