Chapman, K. AN INNKEEPER'S DIARY. London: Orion Books, 1999 1st paperback ed. xvi + 266pp. 7½x5 B/w illus. T= he title is of course nicked from Fothergill, and the inn is really a swish hotel and restaurant called the Castle (Taunton, Somerset). The book covers a year (1997) at the hotel, is very detailed and features= the chef Paul Vickery of Ready Steady Cook fame. Interesting, but more about = food than drink. Paperback. VG+. Dalby, A. BACCHUS. A Biography. London= : British Museum Press, 2005. 160pp. 8&fra= c34;x6 Col= illus. The first of a series of biographies of gods and goddesses. Beginning is good, but to my mind gets bogged down after a while. Full of rollicking merrymaking, seduction, rape and pillage, flight, military conquest and a= lot of wine. Light hearted, but well researched book. Author has written award-winning books about Greece and food. Good quality paperback. VG+. Book No.605. £10.99 BUY from Pickabook for £7.36<= /a>

 

Edwards, G. &a= mp; S. THE DICTIONARY OF DRINK. A Guide to Every Type of Beverage. Stroud: Sutton Publishing, new edition, 2007. 1456pp. 9¼x6 First published in 1989 as The Language of Drink, this book has been reprinted quite a few times, but has been unavailable for some years. It is an indispensable reference book that should be on all book shelves. An A = 211; Z guide to every type of beverage, alcoholic and non alcoholic. Well over 40,000 entries including 4,000 cocktails with recipes, 1,000 on tea and coffee, and of course thousands on beers, wines, spirits and associated topics. Paperback. VG+. Mannering, E(Ed). FRUIT PRINTS. Turpin, Poiteau & <= span class=3DSpellE>Riefel. London: The Ariel Press, 1964 1st ed. 8pp introduction + 23 full page colour illustrations of various fruits. These illustrations are very well reproduced. Unfortunately only two are of grapes and neither are wine varieties. One of the plates is duplicated, should only be 22. No. 5 in t= he Golden Ariel Series. VG in dw. B= ook No.529. £15.00

 

Nordström, L. MAKING IT HOME. Portland, Oregon: Prescott Street Press, 1997 1st ed. 147pp. 8¼x5½ B/w illus by M.J. Pfanschmidt to cha= pter heads. Autobiography with a difference. The story of how a Swedish Doctor= of Letters, a technical translator settled and worked a farm in Oregon. As wel= l as farming, translating and writing he decides to plant a vineyard, and ultimately write this book. It is about life, death, farming, viticulture, viniculture, nature, ecology, plus a helping of philosophy. Won the 1998 Frances Fuller Victor Award for Literary Non-fiction at the annual Oregon Book Awards. Card covers. VG+. B= ook No.456. £9.50

 

Pollack, M.A. = & Penn, R.A. MOM AND POP S= ALOONS. A Compendium of Saloon Statuary Tools for Display and Value Guide. Waterloo, IA: = Pennyfield's Publishing, 2001. 320pp. 11¼x9¾ Numerous col illus of statuary, plus b/w photos of saloon interiors. In three sections, the first being brewery display figures. Mainly American and Canadian bee= rs, but also some from Europe. The second section deals with display figures issued by distilleries plus some for wines. Good number of whisky artefacts, although mainly American. Even so= me of the Scottish brands are listed under the firms that import them. The t= hird and smallest section covers miscellaneous display figures for a wide rang= e of items such as cigars, cigarettes, shoes, eye glasses, lingerie, coffee, Chinese food, pipes and tea. It should be noted that most of the items sh= ow are purely for advertising a product and have no practical use. Glossy pa= per covered boards. Some minor bumps and marks otherwise VG+. Book No.36. Taylor, J(Ed).= THE ESSENTIAL WINE BUFF. London: Robert Hale, 1996. 96pp. 8x4¾ B/w illus. Mainly a collection of the written word concerning wine, plus some wine facts. Writings are by all t= he usual suspects, plus some from the current bunch of scribblers. Date given above is when book was first published; suspect this copy is a reprint. V= G+ in dw. Book No.482. £4= .00

 

Whitbread. WHITBREAD. RECIPES AND RELISHES. London: Whitbread, Nd, c1970. 60pp, numbered 13-72. 9¼x6 This is a partial reprint of one= of the Whitbread Library series. The original was published in 1950 and called Receipts and Relishes. Being a Vade Mecum for= the Epicure in the British Isles. It is a listing of regional foods from around the British = Isles with recipes in most cases. Some of the names of the dishes are probably better than the dish itself. In Scotland<= /st1:country-region> you get Stoved Howtowdie= with Drappit Eggs, and from England comes the unbelievable Cold Water Willies. While Wales offers Bara-Brith and Northern Ireland delivers something called Barm Br= ack. This version lacks the attractive coloured frontis, Bernard Darwin's introduction and the 19 colourful cartoon maps. Contents VG+, but card co= vers have some minor marks and chipping.
