Looks at all aspects of pubs from a historical point of vie= w. Deals with the emergence, development, design and planning of the public house. Serving and entertaining the customer, advertising and embellishme= nt, and a look at pubs over the borders in Wa= les, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Plus a short, but very interesting chapter on pub myths. Also included are reference notes, bibliography, glossary, and three indexes, pubs, geographical and general. Brown, P. MAN WALKS INTO A PUB: A Sociable Hist= ory of Beer. London: Macmillan, 2003. xii + 387pp. 8½x5¼ A book for those intere= sted in any aspect of beer, be it brewing, pubs, breweries or just drinking it= . It is light hearted, but includes a vast amount of information and trivia, s= ome of which has a very tenuous link to the matter in hand. The author is allegedly a beer expert, though on one page he suggests that if you can't= get hold of any porter, you should mix Guinness and Bass ale, surely porter i= sn't that hard to get hold. A glance through the index gives a very good idea = of the vast range of topics covered, although some of the entries appear unrelated to beer in any way. For instance entries include King Arthur, A= nne Boleyn, Blue Peter (TV programme not the flag), duck hunting, virtually e= very English football team, Van Morrison, Pot Noodles, and Oscar Wilde. Also if anyone knows how the invention of the double-sided electric toaster is connected with beer without looking it up, they can treat themselves to a= few pints and get themselves boohonged. Campbell, F. OXEN, OAT-CAKE AND ALE. Some Sketches in the Hist= ory of Bury. Radcliffe, Manc= hester: Neil Richardson, 1985. 36pp. 11¾x8¼ B/w illus. A general lo= ok at times in Bury. Some mention of pubs, but also other aspects of life and commerce. Card covers. VG/VG+. Book No.699. £2.75=

= Cheltenham. WINTLE'S BREWERY LIMITED= (in liquidation) to THE CHELTENHAM ORIGINAL BREWERY COMPANY LIMITED. Conveyan= ce and Assignment of freehold and leasehold properties situate in the Counties of Gloucester, Hereford, Monmouth and Brecon. Dated = 7th May, 1937. 28pp. 15¾x10½ An original copy of a legal document made at the time giving details of signatories and witnesses of = the agreement. Seven handwritten amendments added at later dates, the last be= ing dated 25th February 1941. As well as the legal niceties it lists four schedules, the second being of most interest. It is a listing of 93 properties, mostly inns and hotels, but also an off licence or two, a par= cel of land, Mitcheldean Brewery, and rather oddly Mitcheldean Town = Hall. Detail varies, but a typical entry reads "DRYBROOK . – NEW INN. ALL THAT messuage or Inn known as the New Inn situate at Drybrook in the County of Gloucester and all outbuildings and appurtenances thereunto belonging comprising in the rear and at the side stone erection of coach house with tile roof stabling for three loft over closet public urinal stone erection of stabling and brick pig cots and a small meadow and garden situate at the other side of the house and other outbuildings and appurtenances thereunto belonging TOGETHER with the site thereof and the land occupied therewith which said premises are now in the occupation of Walter Virgo as tenant". Capitals and punctuation {complete lack of) as per the original. The other schedules refer to shareholders, an off licence, a cellar and some land. Pages 24-28 are bla= nk. An interesting historical document that is in excellent condition with pa= per covers bound with thin cord. Several copies available G to VG. Book No.764. Copies are priced from £20.00 to £35= .00. Stroud: Sutton Publishing, new edition, 2007. 1456pp. 9¼x6 First published in 1989 as The Language of Drink, this book h= as been reprinted quite a few times, but has been unavailable for some years= . It is an indispensable reference book that should be on all book shelves. An= A – Z guide to every type of beverage, alcoholic and non alcoholic. W= ell over 40,000 entries including 4,000 cocktails with recipes, 1,000 on tea = and coffee, and of course thousands on beers, wines, spirits and associated topics. Paperback. VG+. General introduction to historic pub interiors (10pp) followed by a listi= ng of pubs with interiors worth preserving. Listings not that detailed, with only the briefest description of the interiors. Where to find them guide, rather than a descriptive one. Paperback. VG+. Book No.495. £2.50

Gutzke, D.W. PUBS AND PROGRESSIVES. Reinventing the Public Hou= se in England, 1896-1960. DeKalb, Illinois: North Illinois University = Press, 2006 1st edition. xiii + 360pp. 9¼x6¼ B/w illus, tables and charts. A well researched scholarly book that is also of interest to the general reader. Extensive notes and bibliography are included. Although a book primarily about pubs, it should also prove of interest to brewery historians. Ironically the nearest Superpub to me [The Robin Hood]= has recently been demolished to make way for a supermarket. VG+ in dw. Book No.523. £32.50

The inns and their spirits are arranged in regional chapters. Historical details of the pub given followed by the story of it's spectral resident. There is a sub-title to the name of each inn, such as, A Haunting We Will Go, Murder, Mayhem and Three Stone Circles, a= nd The Naked Lady at the Fireside. Good quality paperback. VG+. Mayle, P. MORE TIME GENTLEMEN, PLEASE. Why the Long = Arm of our Licensing Laws Should Bend a Little. Lon= don: Andre Deutsch, 1984 1st ed. 64pp. 8½x5¼ B/w cartoons by England<= /st1:place>'s top cartoonists. Printed on the title page is a note saying "Required reading for beer fanciers, darts players and all our honourable friends in the House of Commons. One wonders how many of the latter did read it, probably none! Light hearted book with a serious message, which in part h= as been acted upon. Have a feeling that the author is Mayle of A Year in Provence fame. Card covers VG/VG+. Book No.326. £2= .75

Mr. P.A.S. Scully occupied the chair. A brief history from 300BC via Middle Ages, Tudor Period, Stua= rt period up to the 1968. When he read this paper, Monckton worked for Flower & Sons Ltd. San Francisco: Chronicle Books, 1994.= 60pp. 6x4¼ Two-page introductory text followed by 56 colour photos (one = per page) of shop fronts and pubs, with location. Pubs account for 26, althou= gh some are grocers as well. The combination that appealed to my weird sense= of humour was an Auctioneers & Funeral Parlour in Kikeel, Co. Down. VG+ = in dw. O'Shea, R. PUB & SHOP FRONTS OF OF IRELAND. A Collection of Pen & Ink & Watercolour Paintings by Irish Artist Róisín O'Shea. Dublin: John Hinde, 1995. 44p. 6¾x6¾ A delightful book. Probably mo= re pubs than shop fronts. Each of the attractive colour illustrations has a caption which sometimes includes historical detail. VG+ in dw. Book No= .220. £4.00

Page, K. THIRSTY OLD TOWN. The Story of Biggleswade Pubs. Biggleswade: The Author, 1995 1st ed. 102pp. 8¾x6 Map. Well-illustrated history of the pubs, good historical detail, lists of owners and licensees. The author is a local historian, Brewery History Society Member, a retired brewery worker, and a beer drin= ker. All that adds up to make this a good book. Paperback. VG+. Book No.581. £5.50

Pearson, J.M. THE INVERNESS = PUB GUIDE. Food, Drink and Entertainment in the Highla= nd Capital. Inverness: The Author, 19= 99 1st ed. 40pp (inc covers). 8¼x5¾ Hand written text and drawings= by the author. Nicely done, basically a guide to the pubs as they were in 19= 99, with only a little history. Card covers. VG. Book No.158. £3.25

Pepper, B. THE LANDLORD'S TALE. S= t. Albans: CAMRA, 2002 1st ed. 160pp. 7¾x5 B/w cartoon s= tyle illus by Christine Jopling. Foreword by Bernard Ingham. Tales from a 1950= s pub in Yorkshire, with a cast of hundreds, barworkers, draymen and of course drinkers. The pub in question is the Co= ach and Four, and the landlord at one time was the author's father. Though for some unknown reason (well unknown to me) he has decided to use an alter e= go, Wilf Lowe to narrate the book. It is an entertaining look at pub life, and general life of the 1950s. Paperback. VG+. Book No.537. £5.00

Pollack, M.A. & Penn, R.A. MOM AND POP SALOONS. A Compe= ndium of Saloon Statuary Tools for Display and Value Guide. Waterloo, IA: Pennyfield's Publishing, 2001. 320pp. 11¼x9¾ Numerous col i= llus of statuary, plus b/w photos of saloon interiors. In three sections, the first being brewery display figures. Mainly American and Canadian beers, = but also some from Europe. The second sect= ion deals with display figures issued by distilleries plus some for wines. Go= od number of whisky artefacts, although mainly American. Even some of the Scottish brands are listed under the firms that import them. The third and smallest section covers miscellaneous display figures for a wide range of items such as cigars, cigarettes, shoes, eye glasses, lingerie, coffee, Chinese food, pipes and tea. It should be noted that most of the items sh= ow are purely for advertising a product and have no practical use. Glossy paper covered boards. Some minor bumps and marks otherwise VG+. Book No.36. Potts, B. THE OLD PUBS OF ROCHDALE ROAD AND NEIGHBOURHOOD, = MANCHESTER. = Swinton, Manchester: Neil Richardson, 1985. 36pp. 11¾x8¼ B/w illus. Includes pub= s in Collyhurst and Harpurhey. Anecdotes from former residents, pub and brewery workers. Card covers. VG+. Book No.695. £2.75

Rock, H. PUB BEER MUGS AND GLASSES. Princes Risborough: Shire Publications, 2006. 56 pp. 8¼x5¾ With 117 col & 15 b/w illus. Pub mugs form an interesting aspect of = Britain's social history. T= hey were not just drinking vessels, but also measures, and as such the subjec= t of much regulation, because drinkers wanted to be sure of receiving what they had paid for. Drawing from a wide range of sources, the author has brought together all these strands to give the first ever overview of 350years of beer mug history. Shelley, H.C. INNS AND TAVERNS OF OLD LONDON. H= olicong, Pennsylvania: Wildside Pr= ess, 2003 reprint. x + 366pp + 48 b/w plates. 8¾x5¾ Originally published in 1909 the title of the book is slightly misleading as it also deals with coffee-houses, clubs and pleasure gardens. Full of historical anecdote, with emphasis on literary associations. Good reprint retaining = the layout of the original. The original calls for a colour frontis that is n= ot present, but it is I think the illustration on the front cover. Glossy pa= per covered boards. VG+. Strangest Books. STRANGEST PUBS IN BRITAIN - Seeing is Believing. Not stated: Strangest Books, 2006 rep. 96pp. 8¼x5¾ Col illus thro= ughout. The first in a series, although I don't think any others will be about pu= bs. Celebrity quotes about the book on rear cover. Gives details of what are considered to be 160 strange pubs, from The Crooked House (obvious) to The Baroque, a gothic theme that features gargoyles with fibre optic eyes. Strange book, no author and no address for the publisher, only a website. When I looked there wasn't any address, telephone number, fax number give= n on the site. Stuart, D. LONDON'S HISTORICAL INNS & TAVERNS. Derby: Breedon B= ooks, 2004. 187pp. 8¼x5¾ B/w illus, maps. Good selection of pubs = in themed or area chapters. Good historical details given. The b/w photos are mainly sans people and cars. I assume this is to create a timeless effect, unfortunately the hanging baskets, picnic style tables and advertising bo= ards tend to offset this. Deals with the evolu= tion of the traditional tavern and beer house into the exuberant creations that were the Victorian pub. Deals with social issues as well as the architect= ure. Thomas, P. LANCASHIRE'S HISTORIC PUBS. Trupp, Stroud: Su= tton Publishing, 2006. 176pp. 9½x6¾ B/w illus. First chapter is about the history of brewing and pubs, and a history of pub signs in Lancashire. The rest of the book is dedicated to a round-up of over fifty interesting inns, their history and architecture, ghosts and legends associated with them, and their landlords and landladi= es.
