McNeil, F.M. THE SCOTS CELLAR: Its Traditions and Lore. Moffat: Lochar Publishing, 1992 reprint. x + 290pp. 8¼x5¼ Deals with all types of drink from a Scottish perspective. Also subjects covered include taverns, drinking vessels, son= gs, and poems. Plus an extensive collection of recipes for drinks. Paperback.= One corner bumped, but generally VG. Book No. 747. £4.75

The book describes early American distilling practises through the eyes of a practising distiller and contains detailed discussion on techniques for producing rye and corn whiskies. Other topics include apple brandy, peach brandy, Jamaican spirits and spirits made from potatoes. Copies of the original edition are very scarce. North Carolina, USA: Lark Books, 2007. 176pp. 9x8 Col illus. Never before has there been such a richly illustrated and entertai= ning celebration of the history of making fine distilled spirits. Take a trip through moonshining's past, then get in on th= e fun with how-to instructions, learn how to build a still, basic distilling techniques, and dozens of recipes, all adapted for the beginner. Do it yo= ur self distilling may be illegal in the UK, but it certainly isn't illegal to read about no matter how old or young you are. However most websites about alcoholic beverages don't seem able to grasp this principl= e. Wiley, H.W. BEVERAGES AND THEIR ADULTERATION: Origin, Composition, Manufacture, Fermented, Distilled, Alkaloidal and Fruit Juices. Whitefish, MT,= USA: K= essinger Publishing, 2006. xvi + 421pp. 9x6 B/w illus [= 42 (see note below)]. This is a reprint of a book published in 1919 by P. Blakiston's Son & Co. of Philadelphia. The book covers waters, mineral waters, soft drinks, fruit juices, coffee, tea, co= coa and chocolate, wine, beer, whisky, brandy, rum, gin, cordials and liqueur= s, alcoholic remedies and beverages containing cocaine. Content is quite detailed with many historical references and statistics, as well as techn= ical details of production and legal comment. Cider is included in the fruit juices section. Beer gets only 15 pages and the chapter includes Sake and fermented beverages made from milk. Distilled beverages get about 120 pag= es with a good section on whisky. A history of distilling in the Middle East and Europe fro= m the earliest experiments by the Pythagorean alchemists of Ptolemaic Egypt to = the commercial production of spirits in the British Is= les. There are twelve chapters divided into three sections. The first is ‘The Ancient and Early Medieval World’; ‘The Eastern Me= diterranean Region’; ‘The Later Middle Ages’; ‘Western Europe’; ‘From Early Modern Times to AD2000: The British Isles’. While treating extensively of the mystical, cultist and religious origins of distilling, as well as its links to early science, Ms Wilson looks closely at all forms of distilling in the British Isles. This includes the manufacture of spirituous liquors s= uch as whisky, gin, and others. Plus the central part played in country house domestic life by cordial waters and other distillations manufactured with great skill by generations of housewives as home medicine and perfumery. = The book does not treat, at any length, the history of spirituous liquors, including brandy, on mainland Europe.
